Wolf

     ... regal, strong, hunter

Tufts of dead grass, frozen into vicious sharp shards of ice.
Frozen fields in a harsh, unforgiving winter.
The silent rush of soft furry paws pacing quickly through the snow.
Delicate on the ground, and yet deadly in purpose.

To survive in these conditions, alone, is nigh impossible.
And so the mighty wolf does not hunt alone. The scurrying paws fan out, like a seasoned military unit to battle.
The pack moves as a single complex entity, tracking pray in harsh wilderness, and then surrounding for the kill.
The howl of the wolf conjures both magic and fear. It echoes from the mountains, and up towards the moon.

A sent is found, the hunt is on.
The wolves dart through the trees with a surging thirst for blood. Wild canine instincts consumes the pack.
The chase commences, but the deadly net has already been cast and closes from every angle.
At high speed, missiles track through the snow, towards a single vector.

Closing.
Closing.
Closed.

The first strike comes as speed from the side.
The first drip of blood hits the snow, a dark red drop of hot life onto a fluffy white canvas.
A morally terrified and now wounded animal backs against the treelike,
Final reaches for defiance cannot save the animal, it's hooves are unable to fend off multiple set of sharp snarling teeth and it's head is in turmoil.

Fierce, hungry wolves stalk, circle and scream out in anger.
In a symphony of frenzied bloodlust, the animal is attacked by the members of the pack.
The final strike comes as powerful jaws latch onto the pumping blood through the jugular.
Blood spills everywhere onto the white canvas. The animal is dissected and dragged away, leaving a scene of blood and paw prints on white snow.

Yet the final act of this movie is one of love.

A wolf returns to a den full of baby wolves.
Adorable little creatures, with fluffy coats - full of playfulness and joy.
They pounce around in excitement to see their father,
He feeds them, and rubs his nuzzle against each of his kin and his beloved lifelong partner. He smiles.

This is the real pack, this is where he can relax, caress his family and radiate warmth and love.
Is this juxtaposition then your life? Two different creatures rolled into one.
Ruthless and aggressive in single purpose at work, and loving at home.
The hunting of the pack a necessity to provide for your family.

The wolf is neither skilled hunter, nor fear-inspiring beast, nor love-inspiring parent. It is all of these things.
Where family is concerned, every animal capable of true affection, is capable of fierce anger, power and resilience again the elements.
This is what makes the wolf such a majestic creature of the wild.
This is the secret the roaming adult wolf shares with the moon - the deep melody behind the howl.
Every animal capable of viciousness is capable of love.

About this Poem...

Animal: Wolf
Description/motivation: I have only ever seen a single wolf in the wild. It was at a large distance on the mountains of Montana... and yet the vision through the telescope still made me light up with an appreciation for this incredible, majestic animal. I dedicate this one to my friend Adolfo. :)

This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here. This is an original poem by me!
