Gazelle

     ... wild, free, exquisite

The plains of Africa, and a painted watercolor sunset,
Shimmering sunlight over the mountains, and tall silhouette against the elongated shades of red and gold.
Pausing for a moment to stare at me, still alert in the fading of light.
And then like a dancer, returns to her tribe to rest.

She is the gazelle.
She is the ballet dancer of the Serengeti, her every movement shows the epitome of grace.
She nuzzles her friends and drifts to sleep on a bed of grass.
Tomorrow she will wake, and the sun will once again shimmer on her fawn-colored flesh.

In the piecing light of morning, all will see her beauty.
Her timid yet alluring eyes invite mystery.
Her her dark lines, and the charming way she moves over the land.
He tight muscular legs shimmer when touched by sunlight.

With her sleek muscular form she can leaps between rocks, and outrun the mighty lion.
But for now, she is exhausted. She wants warmth from another gazelle.
Wanting to sleep safely, secure from the dangers of the night.
She is wild and free, yet delicate and beautiful.

Her graceful movement I watch from afar, unable to get near, even in the fading of the light, lest I scare her off.
Close your eyes little Gazelle.
Dream of pastures, of dancing and of warmth,
And I shall dream of your mystery.

About this Poem...

Animal: Gazelle
Description/motivation: I wrote this, strangely, for a girl I've barely ever talked to, and rarely even danced with. Making her smile seems a challenge, and her best friend suggested her spirit animal is probably a gazelle. She's a magnificent dancer, but doesn't too often smile on the dance floor, so I decided it fit. I'd just written a bunch of poems for friends, so I thought - how amazing might it be to write a poem, dedicated to a girl I barely know. Since I know so little about her, I went of the wonderful memories of seeing herds of Thomson's gazelle (and a few other types) in Tanzania.
I'll perhaps be too shy to ever give it to her... and the friend, Elena (who's spirit animal is Siamese cat) believes she'd be embarrassed to receive a poem from a stranger. Which again... seems to fit with this animal. :)

This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here. This is an original poem by me!
