New Farm Thursday Flow
About
Every Thursday at sunset New Farm Park (just east of Brisbane city) a lovely group of hippies gather to dance with glow toys, chat and lay out on picnic blankets. Even if you have no toys or experience, you'll find someone excited to teach you poi, staff or one of those weird "throwing rags" they call "flow stars", I think. Some people arrive straight after work to hang out (during sunlight), but most people arrive after sunset and someone cool like smish will bring a sound system and great beats to dance to.
What:Casual flow arts spin jam ...(and some fire!). When:Every Thursday ~6:00pm (or ~sunset) - 9:00pm (or sometimes 1am if it's not cold) ... check the rain forecast and the FB Chat to double check. Where:New Farm Park Rotunda, New Farm, QLD, 4005 ... (map) Cost:Free ... as all jams should be. What to wear:Dress for warmth in winter and natural fibres if fire spinning (for safety). ... but probably bring sunscreen. Website:facebook ... (and FB chat).
What's Special About This Event and Venue
What I like most about this event is that it feels pretty friendly. People are excited to teach you a new trick, or just stand around in circles and chat. Just by going you'll find out about other awesome events and hopefully make a new friend or two. :)
I don't think anyone is formally in charge - which is nice - but usually, someone will bring a fire blanket to be a bit (fire safety) responsible, and hopefully most people know not to light up next to the fuel! I hope to take more pics or better pics. There can be up to 30 people sometimes, and other times you might hit a random quiet, more intimate night with 5 or so. It depends on the time of year, the weather and what else is going on.
There are lots of glow toys with a few people who might light up their fire props on the side, but since fuel isn't cheap I suspect lots of people like to save their fuel for bigger flow events like West End Fire Festival (every few months).
Parking
It's usually not too hard to find parking in the park - your car won't get locked in (so don't worry about that) - but you may find yourself doing a driving "lap" or walking a tad further if there's a movie playing at the nearby Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema. Aim to park near the rotunda, as it's usually only about 40 meters north of the rotunda where people set up. Definitely check the weather beforehand - if there's a threat of rain you might be the only person who shows up! Better yet, ask to be added to the "New Farm Thursday Flow Facebook Chat Group" and Brisbane Flow Community FB Page to see what's happening (and learn about other flow events).
Sincerely,
Andrew Noske
