About

NOTE: This page is a daughter page of: Conscious Dance

Contact Improvisation is an exploratory form of dance that emphasizes spontaneous movement and physical connection between participants. It fosters an environment where dancers can explore the kinetic possibilities of their bodies in relation to others, guided by principles of momentum, touch, and the sharing of weight.

Concepts of Contact Improv

  • Fluidity and Flow - Emphasizes continuous movement, allowing dancers to move with and against each other in a fluid, seamless manner.
  • Physical Awareness - Encourages heightened body awareness, including understanding and respecting personal and partner's boundaries, abilities, and comfort levels.
  • Weight Sharing - Involves the exchange and support of weight between partners, facilitating movements that would be impossible to perform alone.
  • Improvisation - Core to contact improv, where movements are not pre-choreographed but arise spontaneously, inspired by the interaction between dancers.
  • Communication and Consent - Essential for a respectful and safe dancing environment, where non-verbal cues often replace spoken words to initiate or modify the dance.

A pic of contact improv people.... as generated by Midjourney... just weird enough to be plausible! I thought it looked funny enough to include.
