Animal poems - German Shepherd
German Shepherd
... loyal, stoic, alive
Some people like cats, but everybody loves a dog.
But I don't just love every dog.
You are my German Shepherd, and you are not like the other dogs.
Other dogs have only a surface level to their eyes, but your eyes are dark and infinite.
You are incredibly loyal to your friends, and slow to let people in.
For those that persist, they unlock a lifelong bond.
We are different creatures, and yet our differences connect us.
We both have depth to our character, and we are selective.
To stare into those big eyes, is to stare into the universe.
I don't always get to stare into your eyes, you look away.
There has been pain your past, but slowly you trust me to sit beside you, and forgive my flaws as I forgive yours.
I take care of you, and you take care of me.
A puppy you lived wild and free, and slowly I hope to get you there again.
Your fur coat is beautiful, and attracts everyone to pat you.
But you walk around the other dogs - you are particular about which dogs you embrace.
In time I see you joining the other dogs, in a huge pile of puppy love - and exuding your light for all to see.
You still have that playfulness in your eyes.... shooting comets and the chance of supernovas.
I see a galaxy of potential in you, waiting to ignite.
For me, you are a companion I always want by my side.
Different species, who help each other to unlock the mysteries of the universe - life, love, passion and fulfillment.
Of all the types of dogs around, I adore you the most.
They say dogs are man's best friend, but you are more special than that.
You are my best friend.
You inspire me and I will adore you forever. :)

About this Poem... This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here. If you love this poem or want another written please e-mail me at . :-)
