Driving In and Parking
+
+
It's a short walk from the beach, but as you drive in you'll probably wonder if you went the correct way. Keep going to the end of the road (beyond what Google map tells you). Most likely, you'll see a tent and out front, if not you'll see a dirt road access that turns to the right. Take that right and you won't have to drive far. People will greet you there. People will explain where to park, but it's pretty tight! We highly recommend carpooling.

When to Arrive
+
+
Don't think you can just arrive in your car anytime. It may vary from one LV to the next, but I recommend you arrive well before 5pm on the Friday before they lock the gate. Yes, they lock the gate! Of course some people can't make both night, so for those people do the same thing on Saturday - you can arrive pretty much anytime during the day (people will be walking in and out to visit the beach), but arrive before 5pm before we shut the gates again.
+
+
Furthermore, all the best camping spots will be taken, so I recommend you arrive by 3pm so you can have a chance at shade, and some time to settle in before the opening ceremony. Don't miss any of the sunset ceremonies, you'll feel like an ass if you do.
+
+
Sign-in and Lockout
+
+
The sign-in process is pretty casual, some of our curators will greet you to check you have a ticket and have agreed to all the conditions (no alcohol and mandatory consent). You will also get a wristband to indicate what level of greeting you are comfortable with. If you don't want anyone to try hugging you without warning you'll get red.
+
+
Repecting the Land
+
+
This venue is a sacred place, so when you arrive you should take a deep breath and honor the land in your own way. We've been asked to stay in the two fields, and not venture into the creek or forests. We've also been asked not to pee on the land, so please use the porta potties provided for all bio breaks. All that will be covered in the opening ceremony after 5pm.

Camping Stuff
+
+

+
+
Yes, this is a camping retreat! Local will probably already have everything they need - if you don't have a tent, then just go to Wallmart and you can a nice 4 person tent for $40! You'll also want an airm-attress and consider everything else on this list:
+
+
* Tent ..... (make sure it has a rainfly just in case).
+
* Air mattress ..... (or at least some sleeping pads).
+
* Sleeping bag ..... (or a blanket - your tent will be hot during the day, but can get a little chilly at night).
+
* Pillows ..... (some people go all out to decorate their space).
+
* Little flashlight or headlamp ..... (lunar vibes occurs around full moons, so you may not need it, but keep it your pocket at night, don't forget your phone has a light).
+
* Optional:
+
** Air pump ..... (arrive early and someone will probably lend you a pump).
+
** Camping lantern ..... (I'm a big fan of the solar inflatable lights).
+
** Solar charger ..... (okay so solar charger might be overkill, but bring one if you have one and want your phone to last).
+
** Toilet paper ..... (actually they provide these for the porta potties, but in Hawaii you may as well keep one ziplock in your car anyway).
+
** Camping stove ..... (for two night I feel like this is overkill, but I've seen people cook steaks!).
+
** Cooler ..... (depending what food you bring you'll want a little cooler full of ice to keep it cold).
+
** Picnic blanket ..... (most people are happy to sit on the grass but a picnic blanket is nicer, plus maybe a normal blanket if it get cold).
+
** Camping chairs ..... (for a luxe experience you can buy folding camping chair for $11 each at Walmart).
+
** Garbage bags ..... (for the rubbish, Dhevhan has provided them in the past, but it's best to bring your own also so you can find it).
+
** Beach wagon cart ..... (there are always a few people that bring them and they are awesome - you can always ask to borrow one, but there are never enough and it's a pretty long walk - maybe 200 meters - from the parking to the campsite, so if you have one bring it).
+
+
+
Food and Drink
+
+
Lunar Vibes is BYO food and drink! Food and water are NOT provided. Yes this is like real camping, except that there will be a couple of sinks that you can bring eco friendly dishwashing. Bring at least a gallon of water per person (they have hoses you can refill, but bring your own bottles for your tent anyway), and 3 meals. Gates are shut at 5pm, so you can’t leave and just grab food from the nearest store. When you leave you can’t come back.
+
+
One of the principles of burning man is self sufficiency, and that's a full week isolated in the desert. You can handle two nights! I recommend something easy like a single cooler with some pre-made sandwiches which you can buy from Woodlands or make yourself. Fruit or pasta is also a great idea! For two days you shouldn't won't need freeze dried camping food - just figure out a couple of breakfast meals and some snacks. :)
+
+
Also, Saturday during the day, you can drive out and back in again before 5pm to get food in necessary. I suggest you don't do that, because parking is a pain, we will likely run out of space.
+
+
By the way... if you forget food, it won't ruin your life. Chance are there will be some tents selling some vegan meals. Here's some recommendations
+
+
* Drinking water ..... (a gallons per person - in fact it's safe to drink from the hoses on site, but there's no harm keeping some water in your car).
+
* Mug! ..... (this is the easiest thing to forget, but bring a flask or camping mug, certain vendor tents will serve or sell you drinks, but will encourage your own mug).
+
* Utensils ..... (probably you don't need them, this isn't real camping, just car camping).
+
* Easy food ideas:
+
** Friday night: anything fun from Foodlands (one of their premade meals - eat while you watch the fire dancing).
+
** Saturday morning/lunch: pack some oatmeals or a sandwich, you'll be having so much fun you might not even do both morning and lunch.
+
** Saturday night: pre-cooked pasta / corn etc.
+
** Sunday morning: everyone packs up and many leave for breakfast, but bring some granola bars in case.
+
* Optional:
+
** Fruit to share ..... (everyone loves fresh fruit, so my wonderful friend Taylor arrived with a bunch of strawberries dipped in chocolate to offer around).
+
** Other snacks ..... (crips, nuts, trail mix, dried fruit).
+
+
+
Clothes
+
+
What to wear? Oh man, now I feel like your mum. :)
+
+
* A couple of changes ..... (this is a delightfully hippy crowd, so you might see some really beautiful outfits, and then other people just in bikinis during the day, dress comfortably, something you can dance and acro-yoga in).
+
* Something for sleeping in ..... (be cosy!).
+
* Bathing suit ..... (during the day on Saturday is great to walk about 5 minutes to the beach).
+
* Towel ..... (don't forget to bring a towel or two).
+
* Umbrella ..... (you probably won't need, this is more a suggestion to check the forecast before you leave).
+
* Light sweatshirt and long pants ..... (yes, it has become cold at some LV nights, so you won't regret having some layer as it gets dark, a animal onesie gives you bonus points).
+
* Flip-flops AND shoes ..... (okay, so I thought I could be tough and be barefoot, but I shoed up early to setup and the ground is hard with pricles in places, so my feet were run rare - don't repeat my mistake - if you are helping setup bring actual shoes too!).
+
+
+
Hygene and Self Care
+
+
Awesome news is that there is a set of showers. No hot water, but it feels wonderful! Last time I went there was a little bit of a line because everyone came back from the beach at the same time.
+
+
* Toiletry bag with your toothbrush and deodorant ..... (many people are sensitive to scents at these events, so nothing strong smelling).
+
* Organic soap ..... (there is a single sink off to to the side, and probably someone will leave soap there, but you might bring your own).
+
* Sunscreen ..... (it's Hawaii, so you're kind of expected to remember this, you might want a hat and sunglasses too for the day).
+
* Ear plugs ..... (the camp is pretty close to the DJs and the music goes all night, so bring earplugs or just do what most do - party and stay up so late that you will sleep regardless!).
+
* Overkill:
+
** Mosquito spray ..... (I never got bit in this area, but maybe they don't like Australian blood).
+
+
Wow, that's a long list... when I do lists I don't go by halves... I like to do them because because sometimes you do a quick look over and see something you forgot. Probably bringing all of this is overkill, some maybe you can just bring a hammock (you can camp up the hill) and a bag of trail mix and one pair of board shorts and still have fun..... But with car camping you have the luxury of filling your car with first aid and everything you might want. See also my Camping trip list of items (from which I copied most of this).
+
+
+
Additional Fun Stuff
+
+
Finally, what about the little things that make it magic?
+
+
* Anything that glows ..... (just because you're not a fire spinner doesn't mean you can't put on a show afterwards).
+
* Massage table ..... (other will bing their, but bring your own!).
+
* Musical instruments ..... (oh yes, there is jamming in some of the community tents/yurts at night).
+
* Sport stuff ..... (I liked bringing a little football, which got ate by a dog, but other games are fun too, there's not that much space when everyone has arrived, but there's enough space).
+
* Spray bottle ..... (my burning man packing list includes this for spraying other down when they are hot in the desert - and at LV it might seem like overkill, but yet it gets hot during the day so I hope I can fit one in for the next LV).
+
* Costumes ..... (you won't be the only one I promise, if you want to let your freak flag fly on Saturday night feel free, you might not wear it, but you'll be happy you packed it).
+
* A get to know you card game ..... (for making friends with strangers).
+
* Something cool that I haven't thought of... but you will! ..... (email me with suggestions!).
+
+
+
What to Expect
+
+
Feels crazy I started with what to bring, but hey - that's what my friends have been asking me, so I delivered in kind! How about what to expect?
+
+
Hopefully the pictures have already told a story.
+
+
Here's my some photos I've taken:
+
+
* Lunar Vibes #4 pics .... (was just 1 night)
+
* Lunar Vibes #5 pics .... (first time it was 2 nights, sadly didn't take as many pics)
+
+
Here's a schedule from Lunar Vibes #5.... I won't keep it update with the newest, but know that there's lots of fun activities through the days - like yoga workshops, breathing, tribal dance less - and then it leads into ecstatic dance, fire dancing then a free for all towards the end of each night.
+
+
Friday night tends to be a little more tame, then on Saturday during the day people head to the beach, come back to enjoy a workshop or two (if there's time), then relax a bit before ecstatic dance and Saturday tends to be the wilder of the night. Some substances are band, but other substances exist, and my only advice is to do it in moderation. The good part though - everyone at LV tends (with few exceptions) to be amazing wonderful people, so we take care of each other. :)
+
+
+
Last Minute Details and Schedule
+
+
Some of you might be frustrated that the final schedule might arrive pretty late. You really don't need a copy of the schedule on you - just like burning man, it's kind of more fun to wander around. It's not a huge area - it's only two football fields in size really - so don't worry about missing anything vital. Part of the reason the final schedule is last minute, is again, because we like it to be private. When you get to know the fire spinning community you get more comfortable with the idea that plans can change last minute, but everything seems to work out just fine. :)
+
+
+
+
Finishing Words
+
+
Some final tips, copied from the #5 schedule I typed up:
+
+
* Parking and signing in: The map and staff will show you where to park. Sign in as soon as you can, before you relax. Nobody (not even staff) is allowed to drive past the parking area. Use those muscular arms! Gates lock at 5pm, so once parked you can’t drive out for food/drink and come back in, bring everything you need (food & water) when you arrive.
+
* Noise: Be crazy loud: Want to yell? Then yell - the neighbors are far away... oh, but after 10pm, some of us might be sleeping, so move away from the tents please.
+
* Leave no trace: Yes, just like Burning Man. We don’t want a single scrap of food or plastic on the ground.
+
* Be kind to the environment: Once again, please be really kind to the enviornment! This means carpooling, bringing a mug and other reusables, and not wandering into the forest - there's plenty to do.
+
* Keeping it chill: So far no big incidents at Lunar Vibes and that’s pretty great! If you feel overwhelmed at all (by anything), go see staff to resolve any issues and remember there are places to detox plus a goddess lounge too!
+
* Mandatory consent: This applies to hugs too! If you don’t know someone, please ask permission to hug - there’s still a pandemic out there. We want everyone to feel very safe, so please respect boundaries. If someone is inside your personal space, use the namaste hands (same as we do in ecstatic dance) or let them know you feel uncomfortable. If someone says no, please do not ask a second time, or hang around. Be thankful for their truth. Coercion is not consent. If someone is being too touchy or persistent we encourage you to retreat to one of the tents and tell staff so we can talk to them!
+
+
Hope to see you at the next LV! Keep an eye out for me, I'm the tall Australian guy.

So you got tickets to Lunar Vibes (LV).

Congratulations!

Your favorite new-age/fire/yoga friend said it was incredible and they are right. It's one of the most incredible spiritual experiences you will find on Oahu. :)

Trouble is, you didn't pay attention to any details and now you don't know what to bring or what to expect.

This article has you covered. I wrote it for some of my newer friends who got tickets last minute, but I'll also share with the Trial by Fire fire community. Notice that some of the details are deliberately a little vague, because Lunar Vibes is invite only and we don't want gate crashers. This is a two night retreat where you need to bring your own camping equipment and food, and people who come unprepared... well they do okay, but they also stick out as the people who came unprepared!

I'm going to start with what you need... then progress to what to expect.

Yes you need to bring your own camping equipment and food!

What is Lunar Vibes

Promo flyer.
Promo flyer.

Here's the blurb from the official website www.trialbyfire.community/LunarVibes.

Lunar Vibes is an audio visual movement meditation community retreat that has the fire arts front and center. It is an intentional and curated gathering focusing in illuminating and nurturing the arts practiced by its community. It is PRIVATE and INVITE ONLY. All attendees are family or friends of the curators of the retreat.

It's a two day camping event where you can listen to incredible music, while getting a massage and watching fire dancers - not many other places you can do that!

And here's an incredible instagram video from LV #5 (Lunar Vibes FOMO Trailer)

The most important rules to know are:

  • No alcohol.
  • No commonly abused substances like cocaine and ketamine.
  • Mandatory consent.

One of the great things about LV is that all the women that go can feel very safe - it's a place for deep connections, not for trying to get lucky. It's not like our forbidden to ask for a phone number of course, but don't ask more than twice. Mandatory consent means being conscious about everything you do, even hugging someone.

Location

As of mid 2021, Lunar vibes has been hosted at the Hawaii Spiritual Center, a beautiful location in Hauula (Oahu) at this address:

  • 53 Puhuli St, Hauula, HI 96717 (map).

Driving In and Parking

It's a short walk from the beach, but as you drive in you'll probably wonder if you went the correct way. Keep going to the end of the road (beyond what Google map tells you). Most likely, you'll see a tent and out front, if not you'll see a dirt road access that turns to the right. Take that right and you won't have to drive far. People will greet you there. People will explain where to park, but it's pretty tight! We highly recommend carpooling.

Not far from the beach, with beautiful mountains behind.

When to Arrive

Don't think you can just arrive in your car anytime. It may vary from one LV to the next, but I recommend you arrive well before 5pm on the Friday before they lock the gate. Yes, they lock the gate! Of course some people can't make both night, so for those people do the same thing on Saturday - you can arrive pretty much anytime during the day (people will be walking in and out to visit the beach), but arrive before 5pm before we shut the gates again.

Furthermore, all the best camping spots will be taken, so I recommend you arrive by 3pm so you can have a chance at shade, and some time to settle in before the opening ceremony. Don't miss any of the sunset ceremonies, you'll feel like an ass if you do.

Sign-in and Lockout

The sign-in process is pretty casual, some of our curators will greet you to check you have a ticket and have agreed to all the conditions (no alcohol and mandatory consent). You will also get a wristband to indicate what level of greeting you are comfortable with. If you don't want anyone to try hugging you without warning you'll get red.

Repecting the Land

This venue is a sacred place, so when you arrive you should take a deep breath and honor the land in your own way. We've been asked to stay in the two fields, and not venture into the creek or forests. We've also been asked not to pee on the land, so please use the porta potties provided for all bio breaks. All that will be covered in the opening ceremony after 5pm.

What to Bring

Camping Stuff

A collapsible wagon with someone's stuff.

Yes, this is a camping retreat! Local will probably already have everything they need - if you don't have a tent, then just go to Wallmart and you can a nice 4 person tent for $40! You'll also want an airm-attress and consider everything else on this list:

  • Optional:

    • Camping lantern ..... (I'm a big fan of the solar inflatable lights).
    • Solar charger ..... (okay so solar charger might be overkill, but bring one if you have one and want your phone to last).
    • Toilet paper ..... (actually they provide these for the porta potties, but in Hawaii you may as well keep one ziplock in your car anyway).
    • Camping stove ..... (for two night I feel like this is overkill, but I've seen people cook steaks!).
    • Cooler ..... (depending what food you bring you'll want a little cooler full of ice to keep it cold).
    • Picnic blanket ..... (most people are happy to sit on the grass but a picnic blanket is nicer, plus maybe a normal blanket if it get cold).

Food and Drink

  • Flip-flops AND shoes ..... (okay, so I thought I could be tough and be barefoot, but I shoed up early to setup and the ground is hard with pricles in places, so my feet were run rare - don't repeat my mistake - if you are helping setup bring actual shoes too!).

Hygene and Self Care

Awesome news is that there is a set of showers. No hot water, but it feels wonderful! Last time I went there was a little bit of a line because everyone came back from the beach at the same time.

  • Toiletry bag with your toothbrush and deodorant ..... (many people are sensitive to scents at these events, so nothing strong smelling).
  • Organic soap ..... (there is a single sink off to to the side, and probably someone will leave soap there, but you might bring your own).
  • Sunscreen ..... (it's Hawaii, so you're kind of expected to remember this, you might want a hat and sunglasses too for the day).
  • Ear plugs ..... (the camp is pretty close to the DJs and the music goes all night, so bring earplugs or just do what most do - party and stay up so late that you will sleep regardless!).
  • Overkill:
    • Mosquito spray ..... (I never got bit in this area, but maybe they don't like Australian blood).

Additional Fun Stuff

Finally, what about the little things that make it magic?

  • Anything that glows ..... (just because you're not a fire spinner doesn't mean you can't put on a show afterwards).
  • Massage table ..... (other will bing their, but bring your own!).
  • Musical instruments ..... (oh yes, there is jamming in some of the community tents/yurts at night).
  • Sport stuff ..... (I liked bringing a little football, which got ate by a dog, but other games are fun too, there's not that much space when everyone has arrived, but there's enough space).
  • Spray bottle ..... (my burning man packing list includes this for spraying other down when they are hot in the desert - and at LV it might seem like overkill, but yet it gets hot during the day so I hope I can fit one in for the next LV).
  • Costumes ..... (you won't be the only one I promise, if you want to let your freak flag fly on Saturday night feel free, you might not wear it, but you'll be happy you packed it).
  • A get to know you card game ..... (for making friends with strangers).
  • Something cool that I haven't thought of... but you will! ..... (email me with suggestions!).

What to Expect

Feels crazy I started with what to bring, but hey - that's what my friends have been asking me, so I delivered in kind! How about what to expect?

Hopefully the pictures have already told a story.

Here's my some photos I've taken:

Here's a schedule from Lunar Vibes #5.... I won't keep it update with the newest, but know that there's lots of fun activities through the days - like yoga workshops, breathing, tribal dance less - and then it leads into ecstatic dance, fire dancing then a free for all towards the end of each night.

Last Minute Details and Schedule

Some of you might be frustrated that the final schedule might arrive pretty late. You really don't need a copy of the schedule on you - just like burning man, it's kind of more fun to wander around. It's not a huge area - it's only two football fields in size really - so don't worry about missing anything vital. Part of the reason the final schedule is last minute, is again, because we like it to be private. When you get to know the fire spinning community you get more comfortable with the idea that plans can change last minute, but everything seems to work out just fine. :)

Finishing Words

Some final tips, copied from the #5 schedule I typed up:

  • Parking and signing in: The map and staff will show you where to park. Sign in as soon as you can, before you relax. Nobody (not even staff) is allowed to drive past the parking area. Use those muscular arms! Gates lock at 5pm, so once parked you can’t drive out for food/drink and come back in, bring everything you need (food & water) when you arrive.
  • Noise: Be crazy loud: Want to yell? Then yell - the neighbors are far away... oh, but after 10pm, some of us might be sleeping, so move away from the tents please.
  • Leave no trace: Yes, just like Burning Man. We don’t want a single scrap of food or plastic on the ground.
  • Be kind to the environment: Once again, please be really kind to the enviornment! This means carpooling, bringing a mug and other reusables, and not wandering into the forest - there's plenty to do.
  • Keeping it chill: So far no big incidents at Lunar Vibes and that’s pretty great! If you feel overwhelmed at all (by anything), go see staff to resolve any issues and remember there are places to detox plus a goddess lounge too!
  • Mandatory consent: This applies to hugs too!

Hope to see you at the next LV! Keep an eye out for me, I'm the tall Australian guy.

On of my favorite moments from #4... surrounded by beatiful goddesses (and amazing friends of mine) just before we packedup camp to drive home.

Sincerely,

    Andrew Noske
