Manatee

     ... shy, gentle, endangered

A glass covered artwork,
Warm fresh water springs.
Flows through a magical tunnel to the ocean,
With beautiful things.

Crystal clear water,
Still and at peace.
Sea grass,
Swaying,
Not far beneath.

Only the gentle,
The kind,
The sweet.
Exist here.

Glowing.

Beings of light and love,
They live where the fresh warm water enters the bay.
This is where the incredible manatee love, eat and pray.

The skin of the manatee is a delight to the touch,
The best of people want to hug you, they love you so much.
But they cannot.

Firm and yet sort,
Like the texture of leather in fine oil.
My hand glides over your skin.

Beautiful shy gentle creature,
To get close to you,
I muse move very, very slow.
I am not allowed to chase you.
If I'm lucky you will cruse past me,
Within arm's length.
So that I may be lucky enough to connect.

Patience and graceful.
Ocean giant,
Large but fragile to the effects of land dwellers.

Crystal clear water,
Still and at peace.
Safe harbor for the rare manatee,
The light at the gateway to the sea.

About this Poem...

Animal: Manatee
Description/motivation: Dedicated to Amy.

This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here. This is an original poem by me!
