... bright, tiny, evanescent speedster
Bouncing between blossoms,
A flash of emerald ablaze.
The world is almost still,
Each minute last days.
For the dazzling hummingbird,
Each leaf falls from the tree in slow motion.
A slow dance to the ground,
Wrapped in profound meaning and emotion.
Evanescent little feathered speedster.
Wings vanish in rapid oscillation.
A life of simple causation.
Never failing to make me still,
This daytime delight,
Bringing a smile every time,
A pause to appreciate.

About this Poem...
Description/motivation: A magnificent bird, it's wings flap up to 70 times per second and its heart rate can reach 1,260 beats per minute (20 times per second). I dedicate this one to Vanessa, who was trying to chose between this and a sloth. Superficially you couldn't imagine two different animals, and yet I feel like despite the different speeds they travel, they both have a beautifully simple carefree way of life.
This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here
